AGENCY HISTORY NOTE

By General Order 1 on October 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur was designated as the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers [SCAP], as agreed to by the Governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of China, and the USSR. SCAP was responsible for enforcing Japanese compliance with the Instrument of Surrender, signed September 2, 1945. SCAP was abolished on April 28, 1952, following conclusion of the Treaty of Peace with Japan.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

This collection consists of monthly reports related to activities in Japan that were created by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers [SCAP]. The reports are arranged chronologically.

The printed reports relate to various subjects including agriculture, banking, civil administration, communications, economics, education, exports, fisheries, forestry, imports, industry, intelligence, labor, legal affairs, manufacturing, mining, politics, price control, property control, public health, public safety, public utilities, rationing, religion, science, social services, technology, transportation, war crimes, and welfare. The subjects of the reports vary from month to month. The reports include information about Korea from September 1945-February 1946.
