The records of Battery D, 129th Field Artillery, provide administrative information about the unit primarily during the period of its service in France in 1918 and 1919. They give information about enlistments, discharges, furloughs, transfers, training, promotions, equipment, medical problems, disciplinary actions, pay allotments, and disbursements. They do not include reports about action in combat experienced by the unit. The records are copies of original documents in the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The records are arranged in a subject file. Two "Correspondence Books" index a body of correspondence by the name of the person involved and provide a brief description of the purport of each item. These two books apparently do not list items from the three folders of correspondence that are present in this file group. There is some correlation, however, between the listings in the correspondence books and the material in the other folders. The extent of correlation is uncertain, but at least some of the items listed in the correspondence books are present in these folders. Harry S. Truman is a frequent correspondent in this material.
Other collections in the holdings of the Truman Library that relate to Battery D, 129th Field Artillery, and to the military career of Harry S. Truman include the following: the Papers of Harry S. Truman Pertaining to Family, Business and Personal Affairs (Correspondence File and Military File); Records of the Missouri National Guard, Office of the Adjutant General, State of Missouri (eight pages relating to Truman's service in the Missouri National Guard); Record Group 15, Truman's Veterans Administration benefits claim folder, 1927-73; Record Group 120, records of the American Expeditionary Forces General Headquarters, 1917-19, and documents relating to the 35th Division, U.S. Army, from September 11, 1918 to March 26, 1919; Record Group 407, military personnel file of Harry S. Truman, 1917-55; the papers of Rufus B. Burrus (U.S. Army File), Lorain H. Cunningham, Edward Jacobson, and L. Curtis Tiernan; and the records of the 35th Division Association.
The following oral history interviews also relate to Battery D and Truman's military career: Mary Ethel Noland (OH 19), Frederick J. Bowman (OH 96), Ted Marks (OH 5), Carleton Kent (OH 164), Cornelius J. Mara (OH 127), Ruby Jane Hall (OH 360), Tom L. Evans (OH 28), William J. Bray (OH 21), Matthew J. Connelly (OH 70), Edward T.
