The papers of Martin L. Friedman consist of memorabilia, speeches, itineraries and schedules, press clippings, photographs, correspondence, biographical sketches, invitations, materials from the 1961 Inauguration, newspaper clippings, and White House stationery and other items related to his work as a special assistant to President Truman. Part of the collection was originally opened for research in 1977 as part of the Truman Library’s Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection (MHDC 285).
The memorabilia in the Subject File includes tickets, programs, and invitations for many events, such as the 1948 Democratic National Convention; the 1949 Inaugural; the Army- Navy football game in Philadelphia on December 2, 1950; the 1951 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner; and the showing of the Army Signal Corps film "Midwest Flood Disaster of 1951.” The collection also includes press clippings concerning the 1952 Democratic National Convention and scandals in the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.
Other materials include four speeches, two of which were given by President Truman, and itineraries for several trips taken by the President. There are also several documents that show Friedman's involvement with the Democratic Presidential campaign of Governor Adlai Stevenson. There is a detailed memo and itinerary for Governor Stevenson's first trip west in September 1952 as well as information concerning Governor Stevenson's visit to the White House in August of 1952.
The series also contains correspondence related to the donation of Friedman’s papers to the Truman Library, a conference on President Truman’s administration, and Friedman’s membership as a Harry S. Truman Library Institute Honorary Fellow. Also included are biographical sketches, invitations to White House events, materials from the 1961 John F. Kennedy Inauguration, newspaper clippings, and White House stationery.
The Truman Library also has the Martin L. Friedman Files, which are part of the Harry S. Truman Papers, and an oral history interview with Martin L. Friedman.
