Students will compare and contrast women’s issues of two time periods

Rationale (why are you doing this?)

Eleanor Roosevelt was a leader in women’s issues.  We will be electing another President in 2016.  Women’s issues are always up for debate. The students will compare and contrast women’s issues of Eleanor Roosevelt’s period and current women’s issues of today.

Lesson Objectives - the student will

Students will identify women’s issues when Eleanor Roosevelt was first lady.

Students will identify issues affecting women today.

Students will compare and contrast women’s issues of two time periods.

CCSS. ELA-Literacy. RH.9-101 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, attending such features as the date and origin of the information.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy, RH.9-10-2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source:  provide an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the course of the text.

Rh.9-1-.3 Analyze in detail a series of events described in the text; determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them.

Fully describe the activity or assignment in detail. What will both the teacher and the students do?

Students will be given examples of advice columns from the newspaper. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a column called “My Day” exploring many issues of the day.  Using the internet students will go to http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/primary-resources/eleanor-women/ and read primary source documents of the “My Day” column.

Using a graphic organize,r students will identify two women’s issues and explore how are they alike and how are they different, then and now.

Assessment: fully explain the assessment method in detail or create and attach a scoring guide

Assessment will be determined by a compare and contrast scoring rubric.
