The students will have read the chapter on WWII and have done a Critical Book Review on WWII.
They will also have watched the Story of us DVD by the History Channel on WWII.
They will also have done concept or mind maps on the chapter.
Close Reads are expected in all classrooms in USD 449.
The purpose is to increase vocabulary in the field, develop skills to analyze primary sources, and to use critical writing skills.
All these skills will be needed on the state assessments(see HGSS Skills by Grade[6-8] and Discipline), and for our students to be successful in their future lives.

Day 1:
The teacher will divide the class into teams of 3-4 students each
( make up of each team [as in high/low students] is based on the professional judgement of the teacher).
A) 1st Read - the teacher will read the document to the entire class(pg. 4)
2nd read the teams will read the document again together .
B) Each team member will underline or highlight all unknown words.
The team will then define all the words the team has highlighted.
C) Last 10 minutes of the class, each team will review with the class all the their unknown words
( teams will notice how they all have very similar lists) .
Day 2:
Text dependent Questions (all of these are on the board)
A) Each team will answer the following questions:
1)What does Truman say we are prepared for?
2)Who will give the “facts”?
3)Who will give the “utmost care”?
4)What is “no mistake” talking about? 5)What will come from the sky?
B) Last 10 minutes of class will review together all the team’s answers and compare any differences between the teams
Day 3: Document Essay
A. Each student will write a 3-4 paragraph (4-6 sentences) essay
B. Question based on the document(pg.4), What is the message being delivered, to what audience, and for what purpose?
Be sure to cite examples from the document.
C.Due by the end of class.
Days 1 & 2 team work:
20-17 pts. contributes to the team. listens to team mates, records teams answers.16-13 pts. listens and contributes to the team. 12-10 pts. listens.
Day 3 Essay: 50 pts.
50-45 pts Essay explains message, the audience, purpose, cites examples from text,2 complete paragraphs, and proper grammar.
44-36 pts. explains message, the audience, purpose, cites few examples from text,brief paragraphs, grammar mistakes.
35-30 pts. explains message, audience, lacks the purpose , fails to cite examples, short of paragraphs, poor grammar.
