The papers of Edwin G. Arnold consist of correspondence, reports, and other materials primarily related to Arnold’s various administrative positions with the U.S. Government. The collection is comprised of one series, a Subject File, arranged alphabetically by folder title.
Included in the collection is biographical information on Arnold, including civil service applications, many commendation letters, and personnel action forms. Also included are news clippings, handwritten notes, travel requests, and several guest lists from Arnold’s time in Sweden. A foreign policy bibliography outlines resources on international relations, organizations, special problems, and regions.
The bulk of the correspondence is professional in nature, with occasional personal comments included in a few letters. Due to the international nature of Arnold’s work, the correspondence includes many letters from other U.S. Government administrators in various foreign offices, as well as administrators from foreign governments. The correspondence also includes information on Arnold’s confidential mission to the Hawaiian Islands for the War Department in 1942 in relation to the evacuation of Japanese descendants from the territory.
A variety of reports and writings by Arnold and others are included in the collection. Arnold’s typed dissertation includes handwritten notes and hand-drawn charts. Additional reports include a Farm Security Administration report, an undated report by Arnold entitled “Nationalism and Internationalism,” and a report entitled “Summary and Progress Report of the Wheeler-Case Program,” issued by the Office of Land Use Coordination in 1941.
Also included are separate reports on the balance of international payments of China, Denmark, Japan, and Sweden in 1933.
The Truman Library also has the papers of Dillon S. Myer (Director, War Relocation Authority, 1942-1946) and Paul G. Hoffman (Administrator, Economic Cooperation Administration, 1948-1950), two men under whom Arnold served in the U.S. Government. Official File 6 in the papers of Harry S. Truman includes information on Arnold’s service in the Department of the Interior.
