[The White House] July 1, 1947
Dear Bess:
You know what I had to do? I had to check up on myself to be sure I wasn't dreaming when I talked to you last night. I'd read King Henry IV of France and the study of prehistoric civilization which Margie gave me for Father's Day until I'd had to put drops in my eyes to keep them open and finally at 11:30 put the second call in for you. I'd already called Frank and George at 9:30 and received no answer so I judged that they were at the station to meet you. The R.R. Company had informed me you would get through, but I never spent such a bad 4 hours except when Margie was to sing. Then to top it all off at 11:45 I went sound asleep and what I mean sound asleep and when you answered I wasn't sure I hadn't dreamed I talked to you. So I had Rose to check with the Secret Service and they reported you had talked to me - then I knew I hadn't dreamed it.
Had a heck of a day yesterday and today. Went to dinner on Forestal's yacht in honor of Mr. Dupree, President of Proctor and Gamble who is quitting the Presidency of the War Mobilization Board. He's a grand old man. Didn't like me when he came - but is strong for me now. Patterson, Kenneth Royal, Eisenhower, Nimitz, Petersen, Asst. Sec. War, John Sullivan were all there. Mr. Dupree was apparently highly pleased because I was present - and I had a nice evening. Got home at 10:15 P.M. and am winding up the day with your letter. Hope you are doing as well.
Have a terrible day tomorrow on account of Montecello [sic] the next day. Hope its not as hot out there as it is here. Humidity seems to be 100%. We had a real downpour while I was on the boat. But it's just hot and sticky now.
Ask Margie if she can write!
Lots of love Harry.
